SONG OF MERICA (2021) & THE MERICA MYTHOS (Ongoing)
Song of @Merica (#1-12), 2021. Acrylic, ink, spray paint, watercolour, synthetic grass, pencil, and pastel on reformed paper.
Song of @Merica, a.k.a. The Song of Merica, tells the story of the glorious rise and tragic fall of the greatest nation of all time. While its characters, settings, dialect, and allusions may feel recent, this story has been with us humans from the dawn of time. I hope you find yourself gripped by the dreams of Washington and MartinX, horrified by King Virus and the Admins of Fear, aligning with the Batmans, and inspired by the sacrifice of Joan Appleseed of the Arks. Myth is our eternal shared inheritance. Our societal glue. This epic belongs to all of us, and I encourage anyone to explore and continue this story however they are inspired to do so.
As a body of work, the Merica mythos is an ever expanding cosmology and narrative universe that Uzelac shares through multimedia works that span painting and illustration, sculpture and installation, digital work and meme-making, as well as writing and communal storytelling.
Uzelac debuted the first mythic works from the Song of Merica in late 2021, in tandem with his Master of Fine Arts thesis Harnessing the Myths of Now: Restoring Social Harmony Through Mythic Art. The grand narrative, its offshoots, characters, and rich symbolism continue to develop alongside the artist’s practice and academic research.
